Additional Opportunities

The same Title III grant that sponsors the Aloha-E institute also provides additional opportunities for CUH and KCC students and faculty:

KapCC-CUH Sustained Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program

Complete the Faculty Interest Form today!

Kapi'olani Community College and Chaminade University will host the 2023-2024 Sustained Undergraduate Research Experience Program for undergraduate students. The intent is to provide undergraduate research experience to students in the non-natural sciences, in disciplines that are more difficult to find placements. This program will provide a combination of of both formal and informal activities for students, along with one-on-one mentorship with a faculty member. We are able to fund a limited number of faculty mentors and undergraduate students from each institution, with preference given to faculty who can mentor non-natural science students. Interest forms are due by August 25, 2023.

The official time frame for this work is Sept 18, 2023 - May 10, 2024. The mentor and student will create an individualized timeline of work within this period, keeping in mind that there will also be mandatory monthly meetings for faculty and students. Mentors who are selected will receive a stipend ($1,250 per semester) for mentoring an undergraduate student through the research process, with a culminating poster presentation of the student's work. Please note that KapCC projects should relate to sustainability, Native Hawaiian culture, and/or ʻāina-based research. (Feel free to share the
application with interested students!)

Funding for supplies is limited and pending availability of funds. In the past, funding has been used for subscription to survey platform, subscription to newspaper archives, access to articles that are not available through institutional library. Prior approval is required before purchasing supplies. More information about requesting these funds will be provided at the start of the program.

We thank you for your interest, and are excited about this opportunity for our faculty and our students. Li-Anne Delavega is the contact for Kapi'olani CC Faculty and Amber Noguchi is the contact for Chaminade faculty. Please reach out to Li-Anne (
